President's Message
Welcome to the Gresham Youth Football Association home page. I'm very excited about the upcoming season. We are a proud member of the Tualatin Valley Youth Football League, a 260 team youth football league with teams as far south as North Marion and to the west Newberg. Our mission is to develop competitive football players who demonstrate good sportsmanship as well as becoming good citizens in our community.
I'm very excited about the up coming season. The 2008 season came to a great conclusion with our JV team winning the Harrison division title, with a 34-0 win over Centennial Blue. Congratulations to Tony Salgado, his coaching staff, and player. Also Of the five Gresham teams that were eligible for the post season Gresham had three team advance. These teams include our champions at the JV level, Gresham 5/6 White, who went out in the first round, and the Gresham Varsity Blue who made it to the Harrison division championship game, but came up short against Lakeridge.
As many of you know, last year was the first year we offered apparel and Merchandise purchase on-line, through our partners at Hammers. I hope that many of you took advantage of this program, since we would like to continue with them again this year. We will also continue to offer a small section of apparel at our new concession stand.
Last year we received a donation of a trailer to be used as a concession stand. With the generosity of Gresham High School we have been allowed to place the trailer on school grounds for this use. Home depot has given us a grant worth $2500 towards the refurbishment of the trailer, as well as taken on the concession stand project as an employee community service effort. My Thanks go out to GHS, The Home Depot, and the City of Gresham for all helping to make this project a success.
As our program grows we are getting more and more inquiries into football for the younger kids. I can't tell you how many e-mails I get from parents of children ages 5-8 looking to get involved in our program. For this reason the board of GYFA is considering starting a Co-ed flag program for children in the K-2nd grade levels. We will model our program after the NFL flag program. With this said we will need many more volunteers to make this happen. Please let us know if you are interested in helping out.
Our Online Registration Begins April 1st, go to the Registration Tab for instructions. Registration will be open until June 30th, but registrants may be placed on a waiting list after June 15th. We are anticipating registering approximately 180 players for the 2009 season, so I recommend not waiting until the last minute to register.
As always, an organization such as our can not operate without the support of the members and community. So, if you are not involved yet please volunteer to assist our association in becoming a cornerstone of the community. Every little bit helps and we have plenty of opportunities for those who would like to volunteer both during the season and off season.
I look forward to a great season and seeing many of our returning kids, as well as new members to the program.
